I need to go to bed but I can't stop reading. I love the writing so much but I've also learnt so much about New York in the 80s Such a great book, such an amazing series. I can't believe there's only one left

I need an entire series starring Dr. Baxter, Resident Diva and Cute Man (in Larkin's own words) as the main character. Perhaps with that 'hot and irritable' scientist he has a lunch date with? šŸ‘€

I thoroughly enjoy the bants between these three. I want moreee~

I absolutely adore the words Larkin chooses to express the singular way in which he loves Doyle, and this is important - it's not at all easy for him, but he tries. He tries, and Doyle celebrates him trying. (That is a testament to Doyle's own heart and character and devotion.)

I do wish more people expressed their adoration that way, even when it is difficult. Especially when it's difficult.

ā€Because if Larkin was going to drop a grand on custom-tailored slim-cut suits due to unabashed vanity and a distinct lack of hobbies in which to otherwise invest in, he certainly didn’t expect some sort of rust stain on the lapels when they returned from the cleaner.ā€

Albeit reciprocity is the cornerstone of any relationship, it takes a certain level of assuredness in your own self as well as true, genuine fondness, respect and trust in another person to give them what they need without expecting the exact same in return, and trust that they'll find their way back to themself (and you, hopefully) when they're dealing with darkness.

(Doyle does that so well that it almost makes me hate the fact that he's fictional.)

But of course, to not misinterpret that - especially the act of giving the other some space to sort out their own messy tangle of thoughts and let them remain in solitude for as long as needed - as coldness or disinterest or lack of effort is also a point in favour of the other party.

(Larkin knows about this almost instictually - that he can trust Doyle to not complain about his efforts not bearing fruit, or to complain about the seemingly lack of Larkin's interest.)

Sometimes, all we want from someone when we're down in the dumps is the permission to simply be. Without artifice.

These two are such well-written characters signifying such nuanced aspects of relationships.
