When I first saw and read about this memoir, I was immediately drawn by how relatable it seemed, with recipes that looked like they would be accessible and easy to make.
Now that I finished it, I was pleasantly surprised by the advice, stories, and recipes Sonali shared. Growing up with a similar cultural upbringing as her, it felt like she was a friend sharing her wisdom and compassion, knowing that her lived experiences offer a more realistic approach to cooking that I could easily follow—I even started making one of her recipes lately! The advice was honest, simple, and practical; I wish I received this advice when I was younger, and I definitely think it would help younger generations too.
Her artworks add a layer to the memoir that makes it seem more grounded and “real”. My only criticism is that the recipes are a bit disorganised, but I think in the official copy that can be addressed.
All in all, a very important, empathetic, and helpful book that is necessary for those struggling with depression and similar experiences.
Thank you to Netgalley and ECW Press for providing this eARC.
