The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

The story follows Bekija, a girl living in rural Albania with her parents and brother. When Bekija is forced to marry a neighbour, the patriarchal life she’s been living explodes.
The writing style was not for me, the story and the dialogues could get pretty confusing. Besides that the prose was beautiful, the language was complex ridden with metaphors, intertwining reality with surrounding and going back and forth in time.
I do not know much about balkan countries and this was my first time hearing about the kanun, but even though it wasn’t an easy story to understand I could grasp what it was all about. I’m giving 3.5 because I just wasn’t a fan of it but I can appreciate the story and the translation, this work should and will get more recognition after its nomination and it’s well deserved.

Funny and sarcastic Standing Heavy tells the story of 3 Ivorian men working as security guards in France. Within the plot line a critique is shown of colonial and post colonial heritage on different topics such as education, immigration, race among other subtle jabs.
The security guard acts as an ethnographer of the store, looking and analysing all the different people that come in, how they act, how they dress, who they are and what they like, all whilst he remains standing.
