Already this junior fiction / middle grade book has better diversity and representation than 90% of adult fiction wth 🤯
I really was not expecting the children’s book set in the 1930s to have (rumoured) wlw characters, a main poc character (+ actual mentions of those struggles rather than acting like it’s all rainbows), talk of money troubles and other more serious / adult issues and accurate depictions of childhood friendships! Consider me well and truly delighted 🤩

This was such a fun read! An excellent book compared to many adult fiction let alone childrens novels.
I loved Hazel as a character and am very excited to see how both her and Daisy will grow and change throughout the rest of the story.
This was a very cosy vibe throughout. The setting was fun (love a boarding school setting), the characters felt realistic and the mystery was relatively basic so a very tune your brain off and don’t try and solve it (cause you will with very little effort.
I also loved the diversity of the characters. In most popular adult fiction they’re is less representation for minorities so in junior fiction that is impressive (to me at least). I felt the author did a good job of not shying away from representing those characters accurately. Hazel is Chinese in an all white English school in the 1930s and you see how this affects her relationships with her peers and also with herself as well, hopefully we’ll develop more on that in future books.
My biggest qualm with this book was the repetitive language. Multiple pages or chapters in a row would use the same similes and while I think there is some argument to the fact that it was written somewhat in a diary entry recount by a 13-14 year old girl, it felt a bit lacking.
All in all a cosy mystery and and I’m looking forward to continuing this series! 🫶🏫
