I would have loved the book to have more reflections on why people were acting this way. What does each story reveal about human behaviour, the behaviour of queer people in this world? It could have brought so many insights about why we still have so many right-wing queers now. It just felt like a lot of overexplanation. Sure, it was educational at times, but the format made it much more difficult to read. From the introduction, I had so many expectations, and it’s just really upsetting that the book did not work the way it was anticipated. It’s like now I have to do a lot of extra reading to understand what they were even trying to propose. Also, the concept of “bad gay” varied so much throughout the book, like why were a Nazi and a sex worker labelled the same?
I also cannot ignore how white and male-centred the book was. At first, I thought, oh, you would just focus on white gay men, but then Mishima and Mead were added, and I was like, oh, so you can add other races and genders, you just decided not to. Maybe it was done to not increase the stigma other races already possess, but history is history. I would have loved to know how the gay movement changed anywhere else than Greece, the Roman Empire, and Europe. The small inkling about Japan was already so much more interesting, but of course, it was only one chapter:(

I keep feeling, with each new chapter, that it misses the analysis from the introduction. The stories are somewhat coherent, but I am interested in what the authors think of each — what James’s story adds to the gay history, and why he is an interesting figure to talk about?
Just having a story creates a “cool… next” mindset at the end of it. I need the reflections😭
