Oh my gosh what a strange treat of a book! It takes a little to get sucked up into it, but once you’re in you’re in. Following the winding path of this nose-driven man from birth until his ecstatic death was really quite fascinating, and his lack of humanity felt very cold and isolating. From stinking cities, to perfumers quarters, mountain caves, scientists experiements, and eventually his taste for killing, this character both fascinated me and repulsed me. And can we talk about that ending?? Not anything at all that I would have predicted or expected, and truly fantastic. As much as I wanted the last girl to survive I love that he was able to make his angelic scent blend, and I love how it affected the town so profoundly. Do I relate to him? Mostly not, but only in the way that my sense of smell is by far my strongest sense, and I agree that smells can greatly affect those around you and how you are treated. As a niche perfume collector and general fragrance fan this book felt like it was made for me.
