Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group and NetGalley for my ARC copy! This review contains my personal thoughts and opinions.

I was very excited to read Harlem Rhapsody based on the synopsis. While I knew there would be the plot of W. E. B. Du Bois, Jessie, and their affair, I didn't think it would be such a focal point. Reading this story solidified for me that I'm not a fan of reading about infidelity, especially when the woman is so far gone over the man. It detracted from the story's incredible historical references and positive stories.
I may have felt different about this book if the affair wasn't such a focal point, but unfortunately, this story fell flat for me.

    General Thoughts from halfway

I'm somewhat struggling with this book. I find I just don't care about the love affair and I know that it's based on a true story but it just feels like the author is focusing so much on that aspect! I also can't stand the character of WEB Du Bois as portrayed in this book. I was hoping for a more indepth look at Jessie and her power and strength, but instead I'm finding little of that... I'm hoping that the back half of the book grips me more...

As someone who self-identifies as an “academic in recovery,” I was worried this book was going to push on some old buttons. But it’s been quite the opposite. I feel like I’m kicking my feet and enjoying this book SO much more because of the academic context. And I’m already 100% behind Daphne as a MC.
