  • What to do with problematic author books?

I hope this is a good forum for this???

I have collected a lot of various books over the years. I am very cognizant about researching authors and publishing companies before I purchase any books. However, I have a small collection of books in a corner of shame on my bookshelf from authors who later on came out as problematic (or in a certain set of files), free books I picked up on the side of the road or in free little libraries I later regret picking up after researching, or gifted/inherited books I again later research and opt not to read.

My question is I feel icky about throwing book away/burning them. I also don't want to spread misinformation or support for problematic authors by donating them. My question is what would be the most ethical way to dispose of these books? donate to the library? hide them away in a box in my attic?

Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times

Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times

    Katherine May

An intimate, revelatory book exploring the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down. Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a break up, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. A moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature, mythology, and the natural world, May’s story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath, swimming in icy waters and sailing arctic seas. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat, joy in the hushed beauty of winter, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical, not linear. A secular mystic, May forms a guiding philosophy for transforming the hardships that arise before the ushering in of a new season.

    Just finished

I enjoyed this book a lot, it was so much fun! Even though I read it in the middle of winter with it literally snowing outside in juxtaposition to the eastern heat in the book I still felt immersed in the story. It made me want to re-read The Daevabad Trilogy but I think I’ll wait until summer this time. 😆 Highly recommend, even in winter! ❄️

I was able to get absolutely immersed in this book and fly through it. I loved the audiobook and the multiple narrators interacting with one another. The voice actress that played Amina is extremely talented. That being said, this was a book I wished I physically read considering how immersed in the world I became. There is a lot of world building and it is very apparent that the author is a historian in middle eastern history. I have recently been looking for a good first person novel with intense worldbuilding, diverse characters, and a found family plotline and this definitely scratched that itch.
