Great retelling of one of the most misunderstood villains in Mythology. I, Medusa had me think about the countless women villainized by legends and myths, painted as either temptresses or monsters, and how most of the heroes celebrated and revered by people in history were men who had taken advantage of women in their "pursuit to greatness".
When I was a student of Literature, I fell victim to the stories of the victors, but didn't consider the untold story of women who longed for their side to be heard...until I took Gender Studies in Literature in postgrad and read Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea (also my undergrad Lit prof and our program head is a woman-shamer, so her required reading choices were really questionable...pity that she is a woman herself).
This book will have you think long after the last page is turned. I cannot stop thinking about it, and I am so glad for a generation of writers who are now reclaiming women's stories and voices and to make people aware that indeed, “history is written by the victors and framed according to the prejudices and bias existing on their side.”
