i picked this up on a whim at the library and it was a lot different than what i was expecting. the 2nd person pov was a pleasant surprise and i think lends itself nicely to what i think is the intended experience for readers to have. it makes Bonita's story more immersive and makes you ponder things about your own mother and who she may have been before being your mother. it feels silly to say that i wish i had gotten more from a 96 page novella and yet, i do. i wish we had gotten more passages like chapter 2, where we not only see what drove Bonita's mother to study art, but also see the family dynamics of certain Indian families. otherwise, Bonita's journey feels very out of context and fragmented, especially concerning the themes surrounding colonization and war.
