My Bones and My Flute is a defining work of Caribbean classical literature. Edgar Mittelholzer’s whimsical yet suspenseful writing creates an atmosphere of tension that makes the novel difficult to put down. The story offers thoughtful commentary on race and social class in Guyana without allowing these themes to overpower the narrative. While the portrayal of women reflects the sexist tropes of its time, often positioning them as helpless and in need of male leadership, this feels more like a product of the era than a flaw in the storytelling. Overall, this is a haunting, compelling novel that I could re-read countless times.
