My sister is making a book journal for a friend and would like to include some romantasy recommendations. Unfortunately, it's not a genre I read at all so I come to you in my hour of need 🫶 I looked through quests and lists but it all looks the same to me 😭

I know her friend has been reading romantasy for a while now so she has read the classy romantasy titles like Throne of Glass, ACOTAR and Fourth Wing already. I say classy because even I know of them 😂

If you could give me a couple of recs I'd be really happy. Spice is okay, she is early 20s but I'd prefer if it wasn't dark spice 🫶

I was thinking about creating a list for Urban Fantasy but then started to think about what the differences are between it and Magical Realism. 🤔 I definitely categorize them differently, but I'm not sure why I seem to put some books in one vs. the other! Some examples:

Urban Fantasy: Kate Daniels series Mercy Thompson series Forty Proof series Innkeeper Chronicles Crescent City

Magical Realism: Ninth House A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping The Cuddle Clause

How do you all differentiate between the two? Or do you categorize them the same?

(Also, recommendations for both are always appreciated!)

I just found out about an indie bookstore opening in Alexandria, Virginia on Sept. 1. If you live in the area and are into sci-fi and horror you may want to check it out!

According to its website, 🔗 Long Dark House "will be an independent bookstore specializing in horror and science fiction, with a carefully curated selection of other strange stories. Rooted in community, curiosity, and imagination, the bookstore was founded on the belief that bookstores should be places to gather, linger, discover, and connect."

It's also beginning its Black Horror Collective with its first bookclub pick in Sept, Fledgling by Octavia Butler.

Hello friends! I'm making myself a little fall curriculum if you will, or a mini challenge for myself. I saw a post recently on IG by genrepodcast where a bookish creator was listing the mothers of all "romantasy" authors from the early 90's-00s. The point was that these romantic high fantasy have existed long before the trend and that there's lots of older books out there to read that aren't trending. I've always loved romantic fantasy but the current trends haven't been hitting for me. Too much romance focus, not enough of the fantasy elements, in my opinion, and the writing leaves much to be desired. It did make me nostalgic and want to read more of the oldies I've missed previously!

I'm read (or attempted) some of them but am looking to you, my fellow Boundlings, to suggest your favs! In summary, I'm looking for (1) older fantasy books with some romance (2) written by women and (3) that you loved. I can’t believe it’s finally here! Nonfiction has always been one of my favorite genres because you can learn so much about so many topics - there are truly a never ending number of rabbit holes to fall down 😉
