this is one of those books that should be read in schools. excerpts from this should be in textbooks. the amount of times i tried not to tear up while listening to the audiobook in public is too many to count (from sheer rage and from when things hit a little too close to home).

this is a long memoir that's a little hard to get through on the account of the heavy topics yes, but also because it unflinchingly goes into minute details of Chanel's experience with the court system, the unending mundane horrors of it. it feels like we as the audience go through it all alongside Chanel. Her voice is so patient and so unyielding and it's because of people like her we have even a minuscule amount of change in the judicial system.

as a memoir, it's also such a well-crafted piece of writing. she's able to establish her setting and surroundings with such clear tangible imagery and weave intense emotion throughout. if i had a physical copy, it would be marked up to hell.

i would recommend everyone to read or listen to this book asap. definitely one of my top reads of the year.
