a very charming and surprisingly romantic murder mystery book. i read this blindly and i’m very pleased!
it’s a bit harder to get into at first. the story started in the middle, everything is already established, a lot of names being thrown around while we, as reader, is still in the dark. you just gotta keep moving, maybe take notes/highlight some part to go back again later. the chapters are very short and the pov keeps changing, which can be confusing sometimes. joyce is the only pov that got named, the others we learned as we read the paragraph and it leads to a lot of fun revelations in the middle of the chapters which i appreciate. it’s not conventional but that’s the charm in my opinion.
what i wasn’t expecting when i started this book is the love story. i might have sobbed when i read bernard’s letter. funnily enough the idea of a bunch of pensioners trying to solve murder case feels more realistic than several old men having this undying love toward their wives. but i digress😂
another thing that i love about this book is how actualized the characters are. they feel so real and the pov are so distinct to themselves. i especially love how how dci chris hudson’s pov include his midlife crisis—funnily (and maybe depressingly) enough i found the most relatable haha i hv the same train of thought as 40something years old divorcee😭
anyway, overall i really love this book! it’s charming, funny, and heart-warming. would definitely consider to pick up the second book!
