okay… honest question, how do i finish reading this book? i’ve tried reading it during the day, during the night, with music, without music… every single time, i’m falling asleep. it’s very unusual for a book to do this to me ngl…

I’m so intrigued by the choice to have the reader “be” Essun in the second person chapters. It seems like it’s going to draw me in in a very unique way. Thoughts on why she chose this perspective? And why not every chapter contains it? (Maybe this will become clear later on, but it’s my early musings…)

(bc sharing is caring) for new readers: this is written in 2nd POV (shout-out GingerBiccie), and there is not one but TWO appendixes in the back of the book.

Marketed as "for fans of Sally Rooney," yet fell short. I think what Rooney does so well is portray characters who think and speak like real people, full of good and bad, ennui and yearning. The characters in this book felt like caricatures, where their main secrets and sources of conflict boiled down to surface-level identities/markers--being queer, poor, sick.

small and contemplative; a good reminder that a book doesn’t need to be long and action packed to be engaging.

unarguably beautiful writing, but I do agree with some of the folks on here in questioning whether it should have won the Booker…
