The Book of Doors

cute novel, fun mystery that kept me engaged…but the quality just wasn’t there. Far fetched scenarios about how much of a murder investigation detectives would involve a 15 year old in, and odd similes (“looked pained, as though she had just discovered a pebble in her bra”) throughout made the writing feel juvenile.

This novel feels so quiet and uneventful but the amount of tragedy, irony, and commentary that are within its subtext is incredible. Ishiguro conveys so much simply thru Stevens' recounting of stories from his past and leaves readers yearning for what could have been in the butler's life.

Pretty standard contemporary fiction; but i was engaged by the plot and love story nonetheless.

so absurd and silly but also so entertaining! Almost more satisfying than a more serious thriller because the far-fetched twists and turns are just part of the absurdity without me needing to question their plausibility.
