unfortunately this book is really good until the 80% mark. i get what the author is going for it just kinda undermines literally everything that came before it and i fear it’s also really stupid LOL. i think the last 100 pages should have not happened ngl

Dissection of a Murder: A Novel
    3.0
    Enjoyment: 4.0Quality: 2.5Characters: 2.5Plot: 3.5

i might come back to write a full review later but the first 80-% of this book had me hooked. i needed to know what was happening ASAP.

the last 100 pages were pure ass. no spoilies yet but it felt like it undermined the entire rest of the book. like, i get what the author tried to do but it was kinda dumb and the preceding 400 pages did NOT warrant this ending at all. it felt so girl boss how to get away wth murder snarky and i hated it. there were way too many times throughout the entire book that there were “mic drop moments” that did NOT need to be there.

anyway, i enjoyed this a ton. the plot was mostly good, some of the writing is a bit sloppy, but it doesn’t really detract too much. i hate most of these characters, but for the plot we’re reading it kinda makes sense.

Wow I’m totally hooked. I’ve been hooked since chapter 2, but God it’s taking a lot out of me not to read this in one go (darn book club!).

some things do bug me though. i feel like there’s a dissonance between wanting to empower women and also making them have almost 0 agency. so many of the women in this book are just accessories to their husbands. they’re frail and their subordination to their husband is always mentioned… it’s just interesting to me that a book so dead set on showcasing sexism in law also totally sexist itself. maybe that’s just leila having to survive the boy’s club, idk.

i wonder how much if at all the author’s experience as a lawyer-turned-SAHM informs any of it. either way jo murray writes one hell of a compelling story. i’m chomping at the bit to know how it ends.

Criminally responsible at 10 years old Thoughts from 9% (page 36)

This sentence stopped me in my tracks. I’m not sure how I feel about 10 being the age of criminal responsibility. As a parent I feel like the home environment of the child plays a much bigger role in their behavior at that age. It doesn’t seem fair to me that a kid who grows up in a bad home environment and commits a crime (which I’m assuming is normalized in their home) would be held to the same standard as a kid who has a stable home life and is taught differently.

I’m not saying that kids should be allowed to get away with everything, but I feel like the adults should be held responsible for the children they are raising. Maybe it’s just me wishful thinking, it just makes me feel really sad for those kids.
