I am in awe of Hala Alyan. To write such a beautiful piece at the age of 31 is so inspiring. This book was so well written, I was continuously astounded by the storytelling and prose. I usually am not a fan of multiple narratives with the time gaps in between, but this book did it so well. Every chapter felt like the beginning of a new short story connected to the last one. Every character was fully fleshed out; so much nuance and depth for each one. I’m excited to read Alyan’s other works now.

Wow. This anthology was such a riveting read. I listened to the audiobook and definitely thought a different narrator should have been used, but still thoroughly amazed by this work of nonfiction. The amount of research and detail is amazing!!
Fong See truly achieved the American dream which is insane to read about in this book. At the same time, I really hated him and the way he treated the women in his life. I also found it strange that Lisa See spoke so highly of family members who were documented as abusive towards other family members. I understand there’s a lot of nuance in this though. Overall, this book was truly amazing and I’m so glad I read it.
