One thing that's been ever present for me is the timeless nature of the events in this book. Largely in a retroactive sort of way this book could take place almost any time in the 20th century but it also was very obviously written from the time and place of the early 90's. Throughout the first half any gesture to the present of the book stuck out to me.

With this last chapter, most specifically the last 5 or so pages it situates itself so perfectly in the 90's and really showcases some of the issues with future America. Oil crisises, anti-Arabic and Islamic sentiment, cranks. It's fascinating how this timeless quality has worked moving forward as well as it's moved back, and specifically at a time where the plot itself is moving forward into an area that is not talked about in the intro.
