Having read and loved a number of Rachel Cusk’s previous novels, this one was rough. The word that kept coming to mind throughout was “banal” - the novel is almost entirely devoid of any of the insight or nuance of her previous work, and has nothing new or even interesting to say about celebrity, gender, or any of the myriad other themes she’s scrutinized over the years. She has a way here of building up to what could be an interesting conversation, or encounter, but either narrating around it or completely ignoring it and just jumping on to the next scene. And as I finally trudged my way to the end of this truly disappointing novel, I was rewarded with a final page and final line! so completely out of nowhere terrible that I came closer than i ever have to throwing my phone across the room. Thanks Netgalley, thanks FSG.
