The Tainted Cup (Shadow of the Leviathan, #1)
Robert Jackson Bennett
' I sniffed it once again, ensuring that the aroma lay heavy within my head. Then I shut my eyes and took a breath. I felt a tickling or a fluttering in the backs of my eyes, like my skull was a bowl of water full of fish flicking about. Then I summoned up a memory. '
' Scent was used as a cue: just like ordinary folk, engravers associated memories with an aroma; so later, when I reported to my master, I would uncork this same vial, fill my skull with these same vapors, and use their scent as a gateway to recall all I’d experienced. '
If i had such a scent vial or such super memory, I would worry about exams no more. Take my money and give me those scent vials
The Tainted Cup is a great book. First one I’ve read in a while that lived up to its hype! A detective story set in a fantasy world, with botanical horror? This book was made for me 🙂↕️ The world building is amazing (I would gladly read ten more books with this setting), and the narration has a very, very specific voice, which I always admire. Din and Ana have a great dynamic that works fantastically - a quiet man with a stoic face & a feral woman, basically. It made for some hilarious conversations.
