So. The structure of this book was disorganized. The author was was dismissive of certain established treatments for mental illness (e.g. TMS) and made repeated false claims that lithium is only effective in bipolar disorder (it's also commonly used in treatment for unipolar depression and occasionally schizophrenia). It completely failed to acknowledge the ethical issues with some of the trials conducted on psychiatric patients, and generally was nowhere near as critical as it should have been about the protagonist, Dr. Cade (in case it needs to be said, just because someone was a PoW doesn't insulate them from all criticism for the rest of their life). The author also insisted on referring to bipolar disorder by the rather outdated term of "manic depression." Oh, and the audiobook narrator had one of the most monotone voices I have ever heard.
And yet despite this, I enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about the history of psychiatry and psychiatric drugs, and I would recommend this to others who wanted to learn more about these subjects. I would just recommend taking the author's opinions with a massive grain of salt, and perhaps supplementing this read with some of the experiences of people who live with bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses.

Hi all!
Going off someone else’s posts about disability rep, I was wondering if anyone had any specifically for M.E/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia. Or just Chronic Fatigue as a symptom.
I’ve read Get a Life, Chloe Brown for Fibromyalgia but I can’t recall any books I’ve read for M.E/CFS.
If you have any fantasy ones where it’s a main character I’ll be even happier, but any rep would be brilliant!
Thank you!

I liked parts of the depiction of mental illness and psychiatric care, but I felt that the story dragged and the plot was not nearly as "shocking" as it was made out to be. And one of my biggest pet peeves in writing is when the book is (unrealistically) formatted as if the narrator wrote the book. Given the mental state of the main character, it was particularly egregious in this book.

I've been using PB for almost two months now, and the number of books on my shelves have gotten to the point where my feed has become overwhelming. I'm thinking I'm going to need to mute some books in order to limit the number of new posts I see every day, but it feels weird to just decide to stop seeing posts for books I've read or want to read (even if I really hated the book). So I thought I'd ask the community. Do you mute books from your feed, and if so, how do you decide which to mute?

I generally liked the characters, but I agree with the other commenters pointing out how problematic this book is as an allegory for the Baby Scoop Era. And I also found the ending unsatisfying.
