I don’t know if it’s just me, but this book is written in a very strange way. I’m not sure what to think when at the beginning of a chapter it says something like: ‘Recovered correspondence from Cadet Violet Sorrengail to Cadet Rhiannon Matthias.’ It feels as if everything that happens in the book took place a hundred or two hundred years earlier, and then they later found letters, books, or some kind of records about what happened. Did I miss something?

“In a society that worships only the goddess of war, blood is the primary ritual sacrifice, and cowardice is the greatest sin.”

I could have lied. And then came the realization. If I had lied, I would still be a prince. I wasn’t exiled for the murder, but for my lack of cunning. Now I understood the disgust in my father’s eyes. His foolish son had confessed everything. I remembered the way his jaw tightened as I spoke. “He does not deserve to be king.”

“The story connects multiple eras and characters through the themes of water, memory, and civilization. A large part of the narrative is tied to ancient Mesopotamia and rivers such as the Tigris and the Euphrates, which are considered the cradle of the earliest civilizations. The idea for the novel comes from the old notion that water on Earth constantly circulates, evaporating, rising into the sky, and returning as rain. That is why it is said that there are ‘rivers in the sky.’”
