For the very small amount of days it took me to gulp down this book, I felt like I was living alongside Paulette in her immaculate house, full of the smells of freshly wiped windowsills and fried plantain. Kit de Waal does an utterly beautiful job of reminding us that the trials and tribulations of a person’s life are deep enough, rich enough and emotional enough to build an entire book from. I loved spending time with Paulette; I felt proud of her approach to life, I shared her anger, and I wanted to crawl under the blankets with her in her moments of depression. A quiet but heartstrong novel that covers the full spectrum of human emotion. Loved.
