I went into this book completely blind and I LOVED IT. Someone in my book club recommended it and I’m so happy that they did! It tells the story of Maryse, a bootlegger in the 1920’s who hunts monsters but the monsters are the KKK. The imagery was perfect - I could picture each fight, each monster, each moment perfectly. I loved the incorporation of the Gullah Geechee people and culture. This was right up my alley and I wasn’t disappointed at all. 5 stars, gonna recommend it to everyone I know.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I felt so bad for LuLu, as someone who has a chronic illness I can relate to trying to get those around you to take your pain seriously and empathize with you, instead of writing you off and deeming you “crazy” or “incompetent.” Given the setting of the book being the 1950’s, the added element of women’s oppression really does make you feel like you’re going mad! My only gripe is right after the big twist, the pace picks up way too quickly in my opinion and it seemed a bit rushed.
