Solid book but it feels like just a setup for the next one. One of my favorite parts of this series is the encounters with the villains and there wasn’t much of that in this one. That being said, the continuous growth of all the characters is engaging.

Not my favorite. The historical bit feels a little clunky and I did not care whatsoever about Conner’s subplot looking for the grave of the Brothers Grimm. I kinda feel like you could skip this one?

GOD-TIER. If you’re only gonna read one book in this series, let it be this one. If you wanna recommend your daughter or niece her first female-driven coming of age, let it be this one.

I love how simple the story is and every character has their own voice and distinctive personalities. After being burned out from all the retellings that already exist, I didn’t know how anyone could come up with anything different, and I was very pleasantly surprised with this particular world. My favorite character is for sure Goldilocks.

Very dense book to get through, but the writing is far more excellent than in the original trilogy. On both readings, I got stuck in the hunger games part for far too long, but I loved the before and after. I’m always gonna recommend it for those that want to study the narcissistic brain; it is by far the best part.

Fast-paced lives. Crowded streets. Late nights. Ambition, longing, and messy, magnetic love—all happening in real time.

I wanted to love this book as much as the first one, but I’m struggling. I’m so bored! Please tell me I’m not the only one, and please tell me it gets better 😭

It’s a good time for sure, but fails to deliver its promise (we barely get to see any 1800’s stuff), and Natalie feels half-baked. I think in general the book lacked direction and it never quite decides what story it wants to tell -- that of a trapped tradwife or a whimsical mystery. I’m not sure I’d ever read it again, but I’m glad I gave it a chance.
If you enjoyed Yellowface by R.F Kuang, you’ll probably enjoy this one.
