On one of our early dates, Caleb had said he wasn’t “book smart,” but that wasn’t the full truth, was it? The full truth was that he wasn’t anything smart.
My favorite thing about this book so far is that her husband keeps catching random strays😭😭

i really enjoyed reading this! i‘m not the fastest reader, so 700 pages is a bit daunting for me. but she managed to keep a good pace going for the most part, always switched it up when it threatened to slow down.
funnily enough, i‘m not sure i even liked the kids in the house that much. they are pretty obviously plagiarized from „the secret history“ - and i have a hate/love relationship with that book, too. i‘m just not as enamoured with this group of people as the author or the protagonist are, this luddite academic fantasy is just not that romantic to me.
but i still enjoyed the book a lot and that really speaks to french‘s writing ability. i did enjoy the investigation/cop side switching with the house stuff. and idk if that makes sense but i think the book was empathetic and gracious with all of its characters. none of the main ones were particularly flat - except maybe justin, the poor guy. i am definitely gonna try one of her other books because this is a great thriller
