I'm struggliiing with this book but I think it's just because I'm French and grew up in Paris and I feel like the author didn't do any research before writing a plot in Paris. I don't want to DNF it and I'll try a little more but I really hope the rest of the story is worth it.

currently just really in love with the atmosphere of this book,, feels like something is slowly creeping up— i didnt expect it to be so dialogue heavy (tho i try not to read abt what a book is about and go into them blind) but the dialogues themselves r so well-written, and so realistic. feel like this is a masterclass in dialogue.

also i find myself highlighting a lot of lines— this writer makes such interesting comparisons or has such interesting imagery.

    Jane Eyre
    1.0
    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

This 500-page fever dream follows Jane, the ultimate (maybe original?) plain-girl-with-main-character-energy (think Bella Swan) as she survives abusive relatives, a haunted boarding school, and, most harrowingly, the world's worst love interest: Edward Fairfax Rochester.

Plain Jane wins the brooding bad boy and is happy about it despite him literally manipulating her, lying to her and hiding his actual literal wife in the attic.

It’s basically bad fanfiction, Charlotte Brontë clearly wrote Jane Eyre as her own self-insert pick-me fantasy. She would have loved AO3.

one of the worst and most infuriating books ive ever read in my life, the only way to enjoy this book is to overanalyze its symbols inc. the woman in the attic. plot reminded me of trashy netflix shows written, romance wasn't compelling and seemed to come out of nowhere (he mansplains the whole chapter, the next thing you know she says she's in love?), inconsistent characters, and lovely racism!

bullshit heterosexual "romance", but honestly with how jane seemed infatuated w the girls/women in her life, id like to read abt the queer-coded-ness of this book + jane's comphet.
