At the halfway point. I really love the setting. Cannot say the same for the dialogue. This is just Suicide Squad and it has the same quippy “they fly now?” vibe that has plagued so much media in the past 10 years.

An incredible story of race, class, and gender. Anyone who has any background in colonial history will recognize the rhymes between history and this story. Our main character, from a magically advanced (reflecting mainly in industrial superiority) is a colonial racist in the “white mans burden” vein. She sees her assistant, a man from outside the colonial core, as a barbarian. She does not hate him, but sees his culture as lesser. She learns that his culture involves differences that challenge her internal beliefs and the idea that her culture is inherently superior - including that the barbarians had more advanced gender relations. This clearly is playing parts of colonial history with colonizers believing in their job to “civilize” indigenous peoples who were just as, if not more, advanced in certain areas. Really digging the scope of the novel so far.
