The Devils

Joe Abercrombie

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Holy work sometimes requires unholy deeds. Brother Diaz has been summoned to the Sacred City, where he is certain a commendation and grand holy assignment awaits him. But his new flock is made up of unrepentant murderers, practitioners of ghastly magic, and outright monsters, and the mission he is tasked with will require bloody measures from them all in order to achieve its righteous ends. Elves lurk at our borders and hunger for our flesh, while greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions and comfort. With a hellish journey before him, it's a good thing Brother Diaz has the devils on his side.

Even the demons from the underworld, who are infinitely more creepy and evil (I assume at least based on the reactions to it) are sarcastic all the time 😂😂 I love this book. "You can't do it?" he muttered. "You? Can't do it? "You think I'm happy about it?" And her voice was thunder once again, and he cringed in her towering shadow. "I did the whole 'greed is famine' speech and everything" 🤣

Did not expect this to have a romance subplot... Like at all, and so far it's only adding to the story. It's also didn't feel male written if that makes sense but my romance bar is pretty low so take that how you will 😅

This took an interesting turn, while there have been multiple POVs the whole time, they've all been mostly together as a group, so you're seeing the same scene from multiple views. Now everyone is in smaller groups doing different things. I didn't expect it but I'm enjoying it, honestly I didn't expect this book to have the world scale it does this early, but also I'm not finding it hard to track and none of it has felt like "filler". Also Sunny attempting to be funny adds something so special to the book, she's literally making dad jokes 😂 "Maybe a bit before that. But if you have a better one, I am..." And she turned very slowly to look at Alex with her huge, shiny, mirthless eyes. "All ears." "Oh god," said Alex, clutching two fistfuls of her hair. "All ears, because I'm an elf." "Oh god." The dad in me loved this 🤣
