Have any other horror movie lovers noticed that they've started replacing horror movies with dark romance books?

As someone who reads fairly dark books, has a booktok account, and is a stickler for using the right terms, I've always wondered, what's considered dark romance?
A lot of the books I read are dark in nature, Mafia, demons, monsters, etc. But as a general rule, the relationships aren't that dark. They contain dark things, they aren't light books by any means, the characters aren't always the most moral people, but it usually doesn't seep into the relationship. Because of this I'm always unsure of labeling them as dark romance, worrying I'm misleading people.
So I figured I'd ask here and finally find out, what do you consider dark romance?

What do you guys think about period representation in books? So far I have read two where it was a thing! How about you guys?
