Lejos de toda grandilocuencia y del sentimiento de superioridad que suele hacer de profesores, padres y lectores figuras antipáticas y medio ridículas, el autor pone en escena el amor por leer pero sobre todo el desamor, porque los verdaderos protagonistas de este libro son los adolescentes, angustiados ante los intimidantes mamotretos de las lecturas obligatorias. Con la claridad de quien ha pensado largamente en el asunto y con un conocimiento preciso –perceptible en cada frase– de las dificultades reales que entraña la enseñanza de la literatura, Pennac formula propuestas de rara sensatez. No hay aquí sermones ni moralina literatosa, sino una feroz y amable autocrítica, poco habitual entre los supuestos promotores de la lectura.
