Post from the The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath forum
I had the unfortunate experience of being forced into a mental hospital as a young girl. However, while I was there I met a simply gorgeous girl with a whimsical name (remaining nameless for her privacy) who was reading this exact book. I was so intrigued by her grace and book taste and how she could have possibly gotten here that I struck up a conversation with her. Upon asking where she got this book she blushed and I realized she had shoplifted it. Anyways the point is this situation and that girl has left a deep impression on me that I will never forget, and since then I have had a great desire to read this book.

My favorite book yet, beautifully composed with intricately explored ideas and concepts that had me at the edge of my seat. I am very aware of it's various problems but I've come to love it despite it's flaws. Overall needs to be discussed more - it could start so many interesting conversations as it sparks all these different opinions in people on it's characters and themes. A couple notes ; my first time reading it I gave up very quickly and wanted my money back because I was so impossibly bored. However, after time and maturing I picked it up again and fell in love with everything it had to offer. While I do believe the ending could've been better, a lot of people fail to consider it ended that way because there's a whole second book to Selin's story. 10/10 please read this !!

"She believed, and I did, too, that every story had a central meaning. You could get that meaning, or you could miss it completely."
"It's so hard to be sincere without sounding pretentious," she said. "I mean, what are you supposed to do if you really feel like you've swallowed the universe? Not say so?"
"What had men ever done, to deserve so much beauty and grace?"
