i want to continue to live inside this book. i love the voice the author created for isabel. i love the sibling dynamics. i love the imagery. i love that the house lives and breathes and aches. i love the historical aspects, and i love how the plot grows and intertwines itself with the characters. i probably relate to isabel a bit too much. but i like that i can see parts of myself in her story. i like that our stories and our history expand across countries and cultures and time and space.

i need more lesbian historical fiction written like this. after reading, i found out this book won the women’s prize for fiction, and i immediately agreed that it deserved it.

wearing trousers, a blouse with a missing button, and your hair in a loose plait to try and put off the man who wants in your pants, but instead accidentally turning on your forbidden lesbian lover. just isabel things

the brother/sister relationship between hendrik and isabel is hitting very close to home 🥺

i wasn't expecting to pick this book up this month, but i suspect i might have fallen upon another 5-star read, right after finishing a language of limbs (my favourite read of the year). maybe lesbian historical fiction is my new niche.

i've only just realised what the "almost-crossover" part of the blurb means... i've been waiting for these two girls to meet this whole time
