lowkey...i'm a little bored? i'm going to finish this because the premise is SO me, it's MY city in the 1920s which is so fun (although i am not getting a ton of montréal vibes tbh which is disappointing), and i LOVE cats, and i love cozy fantasy usually!! but idk i'm just not super invested at the moment.

cute but nothing to write home about. the pacing is very weird.

i read this for a climatology class and i think this is a weird choice for that venue. dr. hayhoe's approach is...very pollyanna-esque. she's VERY optimistic that if we just, like, ask nicely and do our part by recycling and TALKING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE MORE WITH PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES!! (this is dr. hayhoe's big conclusion, that we need to talk more about climate change and that way we'll...stumble upon a solution? idk what her point really is) (which, i don't DISAGREE, talking about climate change IS important, i'm simply not convinced it's THE solution...because it's not), the billionaires and oil corps will stop polluting our planet lol. it's just kind of strange to me how little blame she's willing to place on the actual culprits of climate change, i guess. i'm also skeptical of the whole "i'm an evangelical christian AND a climate scientist" thing but i think that is simply my own problem because i grew up fundamentalist and my own parents are "dismissives", to use hayhoe's own terminology, and i just can't really square the way the christian church is in america in this modern era with climate science lol. it seems strange to wholeheartedly align oneself, as a climate scientist, with THE community that is the MOST responsible for climate change denial spreading and, i would argue, very much responsible for the US's (in particular, other states are obviously not blameless, but this book is very much US-centric so that's what i'm pulling from) dragging of its feet with regard to meaningful climate change action. but again...could just be me.
all in all: super basic and not much of a guide on how to actually combat climate change meaningfully. like yes i already recycle and use LED lightbulbs and compost and wash my clothes on cold, i wasn't born yesterday.

i loved it happened one summer! everything else has been ASS.
a) why are their names BURGESS and TALLULAH b) "I'm hungry and your body is the only one that feeds me" is a real quote from this book (93% in! so if you're wondering if it gets better and you're not terribly far into the story, the answer is no)
like what. i wish i had not spent the $2.99 on this at the thrift store.
