Dumas also wrote plays and magazine articles, and was a prolific correspondent.Dumas was of Haitian descent and mixed-race. His father, General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was born in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) to Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, a French nobleman, and Marie-Cessette Dumas, a black slave. At age 14 Thomas-Alexandre was taken by his father to France, where he was educated in a military academy and entered the military for what became an illustrious career.Dumas's father's aristocratic rank helped young Alexandre Dumas acquire work with Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans, then as a writer, finding early success. En las adaptaciones cinematográficas o las ediciones mutiladas o abreviadas, el mito del espadachín ha prevalecido injustificadamente sobre otras aventuras de d'Artagnan, Athos, Aramis y Porthos que, sin embargo, ofrecen mayor interés, fondo tráfico y nervio narrativo. De otro lado, tanta importancia como d'Artagnan y sus compañeros tiene el personaje femenino de Milady, la heroína maldita de este relato animado por el mero gusto de contar, lleno de peripecias e intrigas, quita esencia del género de aventuras. Por lo demás, Dumas muestra su portentosa habilidad para combinar géneros y estolos, desde la novela de capa y espada hasta la novela negra y de misterio. Având o adevărată însemnătate istorică, cartea Cele două Diane, a lui Al.Dumas, ne ajută să descoperim Franţa secolului al XVI-lea, de la domnia lui Francisc I până la cea a lui Francisc al III-lea. Scena romanului o constitue Curtea, care în acea epocă avea reşedinţa în măreţul palat Luvru.
Pe parcursul operei apar faimoasele figuri ale vechii Franţe, cum ar fi Henric al II-lea, Diana de Poitiers, cea mai crudă femeie a acelei perioade şi maleficul conetabil de Montmorency, cei trei formând triunghiul unei iubiri stranii. În aceeaşi perioadă, iubita lui, Diana, la vârsta de 12 ani află că este fiica regelui Henric şi este silită să se căsătorească cu ducele de Castro. După nuntă, cei doi se despart, Diana plecând la Luvru şi Gabriel în armată. Peste 6 ani este trimis la Paris, pentru a-i prezenta regelui Henric al II-lea steagurile oraşelor cucerite. Cu acest prilej, este numit căpitanul gărzilor regale, având astfel posibilitatea să se revadă cu iubita sa, Diana de Castro, devenită văduvă după ce soţul ei fusese ucis într-un război.

La novela empieza con Edmundo Dantès volviendo a Marsella, donde se encuentra con su familia y sus amigos. Dantès está a punto de recibir una promoción a capitán, y también a punto de casarse con una bella española, Mercédès [sic, en francés] Herrera. Sin embargo, el inocente Dantès no se da cuenta de cómo su fortuna afecta a los que él considera sus amigos. Danglars, el jefe de cargamento que envidia la promoción de Edmond, y Fernando, el primo de Mercédès que ama a esta, pretenden acusar a Edmond como agente bonapartista. Dantés, siguiendo la última voluntad del capitán del barco, que muere en el viaje de vuelta a Marsella, hace una parada en la isla de Elba donde se encontraba preso Napoleón. Este le da una carta dirigida a un hombre en París del cual solo le dice el nombre, Noirtier. Pubblicato a puntate fra l'agosto 1844 e il gennaio 1846 sul «Journal des Débats», mentre Dumas lo stava ancora scrivendo (con l'aiuto di un ghost-writer, Auguste Maquet), senza sapere nemmeno lui come l'avrebbe concluso, e intanto metteva in cantiere altri due o tre romanzi, Il conte di Montecristo ha lasciato, e lascia tuttora, col fiato sospeso folle di lettori di ogni estrazione sociale e di ogni paese. Nessun romanzo, forse, ha avuto tante edizioni (settantasei solo in Italia, già dal 1846), tanti adattamenti cinematografici (il primo nel 1922) e televisivi; è diventato un musical, un fumetto con Paperino, è stato immortalato sulle figurine Liebig e condensato nelle strisce della Magnesia San Pellegrino; oggi ispira la serie americana Revenge. Tutti quindi possono dire di conoscerne almeno a grandi linee la trama e il protagonista, anche chi non lo ha mai letto. Ma non c'è trasposizione, necessariamente lacunosa, data la mole del romanzo, che valga il godimento di aprirlo e rimanere intrappolati senza scampo nel suo inesorabile ingranaggio narrativo, che funziona sempre anche se si sa già come andrà a finire la vicenda. I suoi stessi difetti, le ripetizioni, le digressioni, le zeppe, sono funzionali al piacere della lettura. Gramsci lo ha bollato come «il più "oppiaceo" dei romanzi popolari: quale uomo del popolo non crede di aver subíto un'ingiustizia dai potenti e non fantastica sulla "punizione" da infliggere loro?» Nella sua scia, ma senza alcuna condanna ideologica, Umberto Eco lo ha fatto accedere, finalmente, al canone della tradizione letteraria, celebrando il suo protagonista come una delle piú riuscite incarnazioni del «superuomo di massa». Bello e tenebroso quanto basta, Montecristo non ricorre all'armamentario del romanzo gotico inglese, né è un autentico aristocratico come il suo predecessore più immediato, il Rodolphe de Gerolstein dei Misteri di Parigi di Eugène Sue (1843), vendicatore di torti nei bassifondi di Parigi. Montecristo ammette con disinvoltura di essere un «conte improvvisato», ma con un patrimonio da far impallidire quello di Rothschild, un fascino magnetico e una cultura smisurata, grazie ai quali abbacina l'élite politica e finanziaria del regno borghese di Luigi Filippo. Dall'alto della sua onniscienza, tiene a bada depressione e malumori con pasticche di hashish, e intanto manipola la Borsa, usa l'amministrazione della giustizia come un suo personale braccio armato e pilota l'esistenza dei suoi nemici per punirli con sapiente contrappasso, imprigionandoli in una trama impeccabile di coincidenze che non sono mai tali, di accadimenti che non sono mai fortuiti. Proprio come farebbe un grande romanziere.

Alexandre Dumas (also known as Dumas p re) (1802-1870) was one of the most famous French writers of the 19th century. Dumas is best known for the historical novels The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, both written within the space of two years, 1844-45, and which belong to the foundation works of popular culture. He was among the first, along with Honor de Balzac and Eug ne Sue, who fully used the possibilities of roman feuilleton, the serial novel. Dumas is credited with revitalizing the historical novel in France, although his abilities as a writer were under dispute from the beginning. Dumas' works are fast-paced adventure tales that blend history and fiction, but on the other hand, they are entangled, melodramatic, and actually not faithful to the historical facts.
Alexandre Dumas was born in Villes-Cotter ts. His grandfather was a French nobleman, who had settled in Santo Domingo; his paternal grandmother, Marie-Cessette, was an Afro-Caribbean, who had been a black slave in the then French colony. Dumas' father was a general in Napoleon's army, who had fallen out of favor. After his death in 1806 the family lived in poverty. Dumas worked as a notary's clerk and went in 1823 to Paris to find work. Due to his elegant handwriting he secured a position with the Duc d'Orl ans - later King Louis Philippe. He also found his place in theater and as a publisher of some obscure magazines. An illegitimate son called Alexandre Dumas fils, whose mother, Marie-Catherine Labay, was a dressmaker, was born in 1824. Dumas fils gained fame with his novel The Lady of the Camillas, in which a fallen girl, the heroine, gives up her lover rather than see him become a social outcast.

When Twenty Years After opens it is 1648: the Red Sphinx, Cardinal Richelieu, is dead, France is ruled by a regency in the grip of civil war, and across the English Channel the monarchy of King Charles I hangs by a thread. As d’Artagnan will find, these are problems that can’t be solved with a sword thrust. In Twenty Years After, the musketeers confront maturity and face its greatest challenge: sometimes, you fail. It’s in how the four comrades respond to failure, and rise above it, that we begin to see the true characters of Dumas’s great heroes.

Volkan Yalçıntoklu (1961) Saint-Joseph lisesinde okudu. 9 Eylül Üniversitesi Tıbbi Biyoloji ve Genetik bölümünü bitirdi. Uzun yıllar kitapçılık yaptı. Fransızca ve İngilizceden çeviriler yapıyor. Eserlerini çevirdiği yazarlar arasında Jules Verne, Helene DeWitt, Alan Snow, Richard Maltby, Jr, Lyman Frank Baum, Charles Perrault yer alıyor.
