in progress - taking suggestions

Basically, a huge list of every book I ever heard features sapphic characters.

I have not read all of these, so I cannot be sure of the amount of the time on page of the sapphic characters or of the quality of the books.

Some of these I do not plan to read at all, since they are not my style. If you feel like a book doesn't belong here, let me know.

For my favs / read, check out my other lists & shelves.

Don't shoot the messenger.

Another resource for those looking for butches in books.

Disclaimer: I do not necessarily recommend all of these books. Please check out my page for reviews of the ones I’ve read!

❌ online discourse, ✔️ holistic knowledge fiction & non-fiction that will deepen your understanding of sapphism, its language/label evolution, and its intersections with bipoc, gender diversity and bisexuality. (please note “lesbian” terminology was originally an expansive umbrella openly inclusive of fluid sapphics when many books were published, and not all identify as specifically/exclusively wlw!)

Make your way through the lesbian herstorical canon.

This list features standalone non-fiction texts only.

Please request these books at your local library.

Most out-of-print texts can be requested through your library's ILL system or read on archive.org. 💝

In all seriousness, this list started as a joke but then turned serious when I realized there are still a ton of books that feel like essential butch reading to me that I still need to get to!! I’m trying to prioritize nonfiction here (with some exceptions)! Check out my other lists for fiction recs with butches 🧡

I have yet to see a list that covered lesbian nonfiction so I decided to make one! Suggestions welcome! I may not have read all on this list yet!

history / theory books i have on my tbr!!

Queer, radical and progressive books set and/or written in the 40s, 50s and 60s.

✧ lesbian pulp, poems by a latina lesbian, native lesbian writers, vampires written by a black lesbian, these reads are a mix of my favorite sapphic books + any other sapphic fiction i find that looks promising!

refer to my "lesbian history" list for essays, photographs & lived lesbian experiences ! ✧
