The third novel in the Shady Hollow mystery series, in which Vera Vixen takes on her most challenging case yet: solving the murder of a rat who appears to still be alive. But the political tension takes a back seat when resident eccentric Dorothy Springfield becomes convinced her beloved husband, Edward, is dead, and that the rat claiming to be him is actually a fraud. While most of the town dismisses Dorothy's rants as nothing more than a delusion, Vera has her doubts. More than a few things don't add up in the Springfield household, but Vera will have to tread carefully, since, with Orville's attention on the election, she may be more exposed than ever. This is the best installment of this little series for me. I wasn’t falling asleep during any part of it, so that’s a major plus. The focus stayed on the main plot which was the murder mystery, and while there was a side plot involving Orville and his run for Chief of police it never over rode the main plot which I was extremely thankful for.
The murder plot was also very reminiscent of the first book but with a bit more pizazz to it that kept it entertaining and engaging. It really felt like I was following Vera around as she was attempting to solve the mystery. It wasn’t until the very end that I started to piece it all together and was able to figure out who did it.
Overall it’s a cute little cozy series.
0Honestly, the mystery was predictable and a fairly easy guess but all the details are what really makes this enjoyable. It's finding out the how that really gets me with these books and all the characters are so enjoyable. Except for Bradley Marvel... He can go away
