โthe trouble with letting people see you at your worst isnโt that theyโll remember; itโs that youโll rememberโ - sarah manguso
this is the most uniquely structured memoir iโve ever read. Machado weaves her experiences with her abusive ex partner in the โDream Houseโ with research and cultural references in a way that feels both authentic to her and accessible to the reader. what results is a comprehensive map of the complicated and, at times, conflicting emotions that occur in and succeed such a relationship.
i loved so many elements in this, but some of the chapters and writing in here did read a bit (and i hate to say this because of how raw Machado is in this) โฆpretentious. Machado has an incredibly strong grasp of language but some of the writing choices unfortunately detracted from the rawer moments for me.
all that to say, this memoir is excellently crafted and iโd like more memoirs to be written in an experimental style.
I just finished reading this for the 2nd time and this is still one of the best memoirs I have ever read
