psa: this only consists of books i've read, or that a trusted friend who's also chinese has read. i don't make it a habit to seek out chinese-inspired fantasy written by white authors these days, but feel free to leave any relevant titles in the comments and i'll check them out!

Before we started defining novellas by word count, they were defined as being any book less than 200 pages. Source: my Analysis of Short Stories & Literature professor in community college. I loved that class. But he loved James Joyce. So, ymmv, I guess.

Fiction stories about Haunted houses and other locations. Maybe it’s ghosts, maybe it’s cursed, maybe it’s ancient gods or creatures? All kinda of supernatural haunts and creatures attached to homes, objects, or locations.

These books utilize first person, second person, and third person perspective- ideally all three but books with some combination of the three are also included.

When homes, nurseries, kitchens, suburbs, etc. become the most dangerous places of all

strange and surprising hauntings. these ghosts defy or challenge conventions of commercial ghost stories, reimagining how memories and ancestry shape us. recommendations alway welcome!

aka most of the horror I read. Titles on this list are low on gore, body horror, or anything else you'd consider "scary" in the traditional sense. Instead, they focus on atmosphere and eerie vibes to create a horror experience that doesn't need to be shocking to be effective.

haunted houses, spatial horror, and adjacent “something is going on with/in this structure” narratives! including nonfiction about actual places or analysis of the convention

hidden gems by asian authors that I stumbled upon that turned out to be diamonds

i haven't read very many but i would certainly like to read more
