In a time when female fantasy authors were few and far between, these authors carved out their own space in the genre. These stories might not be mainstream hits today, but they are full of brilliant magic, deep characters, and/or worlds that helped shape the genre. (First in Series / standalones only for now - open to suggestions!)

For books that are the same amount of whimsy, dark and alluring, but very sincere about it. Not every fairlytale retelling can summon this feeling, and not every book with this feeling is a retelling. I'm taking the "dark" part seriously so please PLEASE check trigger warnings for some of these books. I'm also accepting recs cause this is my favorite flavour of book!!!!!!
