The eighth instalment in the biggest, funniest, most thrilling comedy-horror-adventure series in the universe - and the follow-up to 2012’s number-one bestseller, Kingdom of the Wicked… War has finally come. But it's not a war between good and evil, or light and dark – it's a war between Sanctuaries. For too long, the Irish Sanctuary has teetered on the brink of world-ending disaster, and the other Sanctuaries around the world have had enough. Allies turn to enemies, friends turn to foes, and Skulduggery and Valkyrie must team up with the rest of the Dead Men if they're going to have any chance at all of maintaining the balance of power and getting to the root of a vast conspiracy that has been years in the making. But while this war is only beginning, another war rages within Valkyrie herself. Her own dark side, the insanely powerful being known as Darquesse, is on the verge of rising to the surface. And if Valkyrie slips, even for a moment, then Darquesse will burn the world and everyone in it.

Firs of all: I read this book for the second time now and oh god, I was incredibly angry every time that stupid "Man with the golden eyes" BS came up. (It made me so furious that I wrote an angry letter to him on a sticky note and put it on the first page of ch. 51, which was sorta cathartic)
WHY did Derek Landy decide to kill off our favourite buddy Ghastly? And also Anton, who in my opinion, is super underrated. I mean??? How cool is having The Gist as his power????
But also, I laughed a lot!!! That's why I am so much into the Skulduggery Pleasant books. Something makes me giggle on every other page. Also, I've fallen for Saracen Rue and Dexter Vex and this book gave me many opportunities to smile whenever their names appeared on the pages.
I had nearly too much fun tagging and commenting on moments and ended up putting about 50 page markers in this book, that might not sound like a lot to some but it is a huuuuge number of page markers when it comes to me.
All in all:
I love the Skulduggery Pleasant books so much and I am oddly grateful that I get to experience them.
I loved reading "Last Stand of Dead Men". It made me laugh, it made me cry a little, and it made me swoon. Maybe not as good as other books I've given 5 stars to but yesterday evening when I finished it, I felt like rating it 5 stars.
