Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

A moving novel about friendships forged in childhood magic and ruptured by the high price of secrets that leave you forever changed. Cadie Kessler has spent decades trying to cover up one truth. One moment. But deep down, didn't she always know her secret would surface? An urgent message from her long-estranged best friend Daniela Garcia brings Cadie, now a forestry researcher, back to her childhood home. There, Cadie and Daniela are forced to face a dark secret that ended both their idyllic childhood bond and the magical summer that takes up more space in Cadie's memory then all her other years combined. Now grown up, bound by long-held oaths, and faced with truths she does not wish to see, Cadie must decide what she is willing to sacrifice to protect the people and the forest she loves, as drought, foreclosures, and wildfire spark tensions between displaced migrant farm workers and locals. Waiting for the Night Song is a love song to the natural beauty around us, a call to fight for what we believe in, and a reminder that the truth will always rise.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. There was a lot of action and it was really interesting.
What the author did really well was writing about setting. In this way, it was extremely similar to Where the Crawdads Sing. I felt as though the descriptions of the setting were fairly lengthy, but it really helped me to understand Cadie and how it drove some of her decisions. Also, the characters were extremely well written. I felt as though I had a good idea of how they all were including the side characters. The author weaved all of them together in a way that was intriguing. Finally, I really enjoyed how the author chose to address climate change and other issues. I felt as though the point was well made in a way that both added to the story and made great points about social issues in a way that was understandable. My only complaint about this book is that it felt a little repetitive towards the end.
I would recommend this book to a friend. Thank you to BookishFirst and Forge for the ARC in exchange for a review.
