puts beret on a jaunty angle ‘why yes i went to Oxbridge and go skiing on my holibobs with papa, why do you ask?’ takes a hit of tobacco flavoured vape, puts asterisk in margin of the obscure classic i’m ‘reading’

the list for people who want to look ‘well read’ and need some books to name drop - look no further if you have read them, more power to you, but this is explicitly about the people who claim to have read them but can’t read instructions on pasta

Much of the post/apoc genre is taken up by US-centric fiction, giving a very specific mindset & often a similar type of apocalypse. There's a strong focus on guns & military. Settings outside the US can provide us with unusual, diverse & interesting stories of survival

Sister list to: Zombie Apocs - But Not US-centric

Fictional settings allowed. Some books may cross borders, inc sections in the US. Allowance made for US indigenous authors

Everyone knows George Orwell or Aldous Huxley. Their works are considered to be the staples of dystopia stories.

But are they?

Most of the people know Octavia E. Butler or Margaret Atwood. They showed the feminine side of dystopia. But this subgenre of science fiction have much more to offer.

Yes, you find here all the famous ladies too but I'll do my best to find even more. So I hope the fellow Boundlings will help too💗

If you ask someone what apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic fiction they've read, there's a fair chance much of that list will have been written by cis men, because they're the books that get the most promotion in the genre.

My hope is that this list will help someone find a new favourite apocalypse author! ♡

into your house into your bed into your streams into your streets into your drink into your bread upon your cattle on your sheep upon your oxen in your field into your dreams into your sleep until you break until you yield

Books that describe utopias and dystopias in some way.

(Almost) all books cited to be a part of the gothic genre, or having a part in creating the gothic genre (including the supernatural, romantic, and pre- & -post subgenres), in H.P Lovecraft's 28,000-word essay, “Supernatural Horror in Literature,” which is mostly based on Edith Birkhead's historical study, The Tale of Terror.

These novels, stories, plays, and poems are “fertile in the element of the weird.”

For those who might want to take a deep-dive into [part of] the genre's development.

books you will probably like if you love anne rice's vampire chronicles (no promises) (feel free to add more in the comments!)

apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction

A simple reading through the decades (1807-1997) challenge focused on deeply flawed characters and societal critiques with a few slight thematic depatures to keep things fresh because that's how I like to read. Some decades are repesented more heavily than others. I put this together in an attempt to make myself a more widely-read person. Suggestions welcome!
