Reading suggestions for the Trans Rights Readathon! (Any year of course). Books with trans characters of any label (or any non-cis gender identity) by trans/non-cis authors. I have not read all the books in this list. Feel free to name your fave books by trans authors in the comments!

Weird, unusual, or taboo LGBTQ books that may make you slightly uncomfortable

Debut novels that feel like they were written by seasoned writers. Whether it be because of the author's clear voice, the depth of the themes or the quality of the prose, you'll be surprised that this is the author's first published novel

Note: The authors featured may have published other works, like short story collections or plays, but the book featured here is their first novel

the warm, fragmented interiors of women navigating emotional turmoil, relational dysfunction, identity crises, and existential malaise. intense, immersive, atmospheric, and deeply felt. stories of mundanity and despair, but also of a different beauty, some subtler strength. let's wallow freely and without shame.

note: open to recs, but those focused on interiority rather than romance (e.g. not Normal People)

these books explore queer space and time, rejecting hetero temporality and spatiality across fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry. inside, you’ll find genderqueer immortals, spirits dipping in and out of linear reality, and queer meditations on bodies and aging. recommendations, as always, are very much welcome.

These books utilize first person, second person, and third person perspective- ideally all three but books with some combination of the three are also included.

my favorite genre! the grit of the everyday alongside the possibility for something more, a veil thinning, serendipity bending reality to its whimsy and beauty. this is a smaller list due the brittle nature of the genre. it's up to interpretation, but i like my magical realism on the more realistic side with very slight tints of magic/fantastical elements. recommendations are welcome!

Fiction in which African diasporic religions and spiritual cosmologies play a central role. This includes traditions like Santería, Vodun, Isese, and Candomblé, and divinities like Mami Wata and the orisha. Can be set either in Africa or throughout the African diaspora.
