The fact that house of leaves was a debut is still mind boggling to me. Someone just let him publish that.

It took him 10 years to write it and then after he finally found an agent the agent had to go to like 32 different publishers before they found one that wanted to take on the project, quite the feat!
I know!!! I don't think that it could happen today. Unless he had a massive booktok following 😅
I don't know if you've read An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon, but I was blown away that /that/ was their first novel!

I haven't read it yet but I've heard very good things and I do want to read it eventually. I am planning to read Model Home by them first but I will add An Unkindness of Ghosts to the list!
This is one of my all-time favorites. I did my big final project in college based on it! I feel like it’s super underrated and it always makes me happy to see other people enjoying it!
I'm actually going to add it to my TBR, I usually only put a book per author there but I am going to read Model Home soon and this definitely sounds like a book I'd want to prioritise 🙂↕️
What kind of project did you do about it for college? Did you focus on any particular aspect of the novel?
So my focus became black contemporary speculative fiction, especially sci-fi. I wrote a paper about Afrofuturism and how it queers the genres of fantasy and fiction (look up the verb queers for more info on what that means). I talked specifically about disability, neurodiversity, and queer rep are better represented and explored in contemporary black spec fic. My final capstone project/research paper was about intersectionality and how it shows up more in contemporary black spec fic, and I focused on an Unkindness of Ghosts as an example. I discussed discrimination of marginalized communities and how this book (and the genre) combat that.
An Unkindness of Ghosts focuses on a main character who is black, neurodivergent (autism-coded), and intersex. The book also has mentally ill characters. And the book itself is about humanity living on a ship that functions like the antebellum South, so racism is a huge topic.
Anyway, sorry for the long response, I care very deeply about these topics!

That is really interesting, and it makes me even more excited to read the book! I'm also very excited for the new Black Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Speculative Fiction quest, I'm hoping to diversify my reading because of the reasons you just mentioned and to amplify black writer's voices. No pressure, but feel free to share if you have any favourite picks from that quest 😊

Dawn by Octavia Butler - it's the first in a trilogy, but I've only read the first one so far. It's a really cool dystopian alien sci-fi thing. Basically a human woman wakes up in an alien ship and gets to know the aliens as they prep her to help them save humanity from going extinct. There's some really interesting sex/gender stuff in the alien culture.

an Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon - I actually talked about this book for my big final college project so I have a lot of fondness for it. It's about humanity living "a space vessel organized much like the antebellum South" (as the blurb says). It deals a lot with queerness and neurodivergence. It also discusses intersex people, which I find isn't common. It's a sci-fi dystopia and is really cool and thought-provoking.

the Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin - the first in the Broken Earth trilogy. It's been several years since I read it, but I LOVED it. It's another sci-fi fantasy dystopia. I would recommend reading the blurb for this, because it's kind of hard to explain. But it blew my mind.

Kindred by Octavia Butler - I would recommend saving this one for when you're in an okay headspace because it is HEAVY. Amazingly done, but a really tough read. It's about a black woman from the 70s who is transported through time to the antebellum South. It's horrific but really impactful. Definitely would recommend.

I've read Dawn and I really liked the Earthseed duology, so I should definitely pick up Kindred soon, I've only heard great things about it. But like you said I know the content is very heavy so I want to pick it up when I'm the right headspace. The Fifth Season is already on my TBR and I added An Unkindness of Ghosts as well yesterday after hearing your recommendations, thank you! 🫶

I was blown away by Freshwater by Awaeke Emezi, it was so good! It wasn’t the first thing I read by them, so I found it interesting to go back and realize that they started with a bang!

I’m realizing how these are all magical realism/speculative fiction 😂 but they all have complex characters with strong development of themes and beautiful writing.

Yes, the topic is grim, but the book is written in a really assured manner and dare I say, it's also entertaining. I devoured it in about 3 sittings.
