Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse - Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena - Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.
For those that have consumed this story in multiple forms ... What do you think of the adaptations? I heard the movie was generally considered a poor one, and would love to know who shares that opinion and why! Is the show actually better given Riordian's involvement, and is it worth watching?

I must confess... I'm about two decades late to reading this 🫢 That said, I'm really glad I finally did! I loved the way that the characters were written to sound their age, I enjoyed reaching back to my memory of the movie to try to compare and contrast, and it was an overall fun and funny read. I'm actually quite looking forward to reading the rest of the series and seeing how the adventures continue, and also hopefully how some of the kids grow. I noticed that a lot of the harder issues and topics underrunning the plot weren't explored in too much depth but rather kept palatable for the target readers, I wonder if as the both the kids in the series and those reading it age, if these will be unpacked more.
