The hilarious and heartbreaking confessions of a figure skater turned collegiate hockey player who's terrified of checking . . . and is desperately in love with the captain of his hockey team. Eric Bittle is a former Georgia junior figure skating champion, vlogger extraordinaire, and amateur pâtissier. But as accomplished as he is, nothing could prepare him for his freshman year of playing hockey at the prestigious Samwell University in Samwell, Massachusetts. It's nothing like co-ed club hockey back in the South! For one? There’s checking. Second, there is Jack—his very attractive but moody captain. A collection of the first half of the mega-popular webcomic series of the same name, Check, Please!: # Hockey is the first in a hilarious and stirring two-volume coming-of-age story about hockey, bros, and trying to find yourself during the best four years of your life.

Bitty goes off to college, and his passions are baking and hockey - we hear all about his team and the friends he makes over the first two years of college, and also about his crush on team captain Jack
-SUPER cute story! loved the art style and Bitty's characterization, I just wanted to freaking hug him!
-Loved that college bonding we were seeing on page, the hilarity and weirdness and in-jokes, the closeness developing... it was so fun and also nostalgic to read
-Felt realistic in the portrayal of teammates, friends, bros (to me anyway)
-The romance was subtle, almost too subtle. Would have liked just a bit more between our two guys to make me root for them more
A very sweet comic novel suggested to me by my younger sibling. It’s super interesting and really awesome to see not only a novel focused on sports written by a woman but also including a queer main character! It was fascinating to me to see the inside of a Hockey team and to learn about the world and culture surrounding Hockey. I am not a sports person and know nothing about any sport, let alone Hockey. Being an Australian means I know even less. But, it was so wholesome to see the whole team working and living together, to see how their tournaments worked, their practices and all the things they had to do to become successful. I really enjoyed reading all about the characters and seeing them grow, seeing Bitty become a part of the team, becoming close with all the members of the team and how he grapples with his sexuality within this very publicised sport. The main romance is also so cute! But the development in relationships of the team as a whole is really what I am here for, it’s ever so sweet. Definitely recommend the read, especially as an introduction to a new setting and style of graphic novel too.
