Historical fiction books with queer characters

In honor of our queen Dolly Parton's tragic passing, I present to you, a list that includes books she has shared she loved, books that give me Dolly vibes, books she herself has written and books about her... basically just a big ol' Dolly appreciation list. Recommendations welcome!! In the meantime, pour one out for an icon, you'll catch me watching Steel Magnolias and sobbing. Rest in power, Dolly.

Here's every book so far from BOTM's monthly shortlist since February 2015 for anyone who wants to read them all like I do!

Queer genre fiction set in a world different from our reality, whether set in a different time, a different world, or in a version of our world but with different rules. Perfect for the reader looking for a little escapism in their next queer read 📚✨

a diverse selection of alternate history novels & stories (that aren’t just about WW2/nazism)

Each month Reese Witherspoon picks books she loves with a woman at the center of the story.

I need to do research for a story I'm writing, so I'm collecting the relevant books I find here :) I will feature a range of fiction and non-fiction books about the real history and the fun imaginary worlds of queer western books. Suggestions always welcome!

p.s. there may be non-queer westerns or history of that era that make their way on here for research sake, but the goal is ultimately to bring more gay cowboys (gender neutral) into the world

reese's complete picks- trying to read as many of these as i can... but we shall see

This shall become the place where I geather all the books with nonbinary representattion / written by nonbinary authors (not sure yet if both). I have not read most of them but rather have them from lists, feel free to suggest more, or report falsly added books

Books that are set in a Wild West type world, but contain magic or other alternate universe elements. Also, queer westerns, because we love those.

Another collection of books saved from TikTok. We don't gatekeep so I compiled them all here.

A list of books from A-Z. I tried to include various genres to appeal to a wide array of readers. I wanted this to be a good reference list for anyone doing an alphabet reading challenge or anyone just looking for a new book to read!

A compilation of all of Belletrist’s monthly picks

Why read a cozy book, when instead you can feel unsettled yet somewhat validated while reading of another women’s journey through the horrors of life?

From a slow descent into madness, covering up murder for siblings, accidentally joining a cult, to insurance fraud over taxidermy - this list covers it all!!

Joseph Fink (one of the writers of WTNV) gave us a recommendation list on Tiktok for fans of the podcast, so I thought it would be nice to bring it here.
