Recs if you like Under the Whispering Door...

Standalone fantasy books that won't make you invest your life in a dozen installments

books whose main characters are older and disillusioned with life and go on a little adventure that melts their hearts (and heals yours)

books in which Death, or a god of Death, or the Grim Reaper (or a Grim Reaper), is personified. This list will NOT include the works of Neil Gaiman (ew)

For when things seem hopeless. We can always try again and again ❤️

This list is a community project, I asked in the club and received multiple suggestions which I then added onto a list: fiction and nonfiction, fantasy, contemporary, sci-fi, the main theme is just hope. Some people said their recommendation might not fit very well but I added it anyways.

Also, in the og post, I mentioned The Good Place and if people have recommendations tending to that, so some books are related to that.

this is for aesthetics only

fiction books taking place after death

a mix of romance and romance-adjacent books starring bisexual main characters.

books with bisexual characters (even if they end up with the opposite sex THEY'RE STILL BI)

Exactly what it says on the tin: queer stories that also have ghosts.

IN PROGRESS

romance that resonates with me as a non-binary queer person who is AuDHD

created after many struggles finding romance novels that i found palatable. books are not necessarily queer nor feature explicitly AuDHD characters, they just have storylines & romances that tickle my brain

fiction books centered around characters processing grief 🦋

Cozy and magical, books you can curl up with and read about magical worlds, great storytelling, and otherworldly romance

Tall, dark and morally ambiguous has its time and place okay? But sometimes we just need the love of a sweet, sweet man who would never harm us 😌

Edited to add: do you KNOW how hard it was to find even five books?? I had to scroll back through my finished reads all the way to 2021! 😂 either I have Tall, dark and morally ambiguous taste, or it’s a rare trope. Either way, now starts my mission to seek them out. This will be a mix of genres, m/f m/m and possibly trigger warnings.

i made one of these for traumatised characters, but i thought i’d make a general one too. just queer people with the families they find. some are traumatised, some are not, some don’t have their stories revolving around that trauma.

my reading interests for some LGBTQ sci fi, fantasy, and horror books and series
