Remarkably Bright Creatures, an exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope, tracing a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus. After Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova's son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it's too late. Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.
This was one of my favorite reads last year, and I looked into the origin story since it's Shelby Van Pelt's debut (and she rocked it). Have to share some quotes from her recounting the writing process bc this is literally so crazy impressive and inspirational: On her inspiration: "I saw this clip of an octopus who was determined to escape its enclosure, and I just thought…there’s a character in there. A little while later, I was in a writing workshop, and we had this prompt to write from an unexpected point of view, so my mind immediately went to that octopus. Exasperated and frustrated at the bumbling humans who were trying to keep him confined. The scene that I wrote in that class eventually became the first pages of this novel." On her experience: "When I enrolled in the workshop [...] I'd never taken a writing class before. But I had always enjoyed writing, and I was living in a new city, and figured it might be a fun way to meet people. It was a continuing-education class, open to anyone. I’ve since done similar workshops at other institutions, and I am a huge fan of the community classes, adult enrichment, whatever you want to call them. In my experience, they are full of lovely, unpretentious folks from all different walks of life and are a wonderful, accessible resource for anyone who wants to get into writing."

Strong 3.5. Super sweet. The reader knows what’s going to happen, we’re just waiting for the characters to catch up. Loved the multiple POVs. Really good audiobook.
I listened as an audiobook and knew very little about the book going in. It was such a heartwarming, clever story that surprised me in the best way. I fell in love with so many of the characters and definitely rooted for them. Extremely satisfying listen and the narrator was a perfect fit.
I know this book was huge on booktok but this book overall fell flat for me. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED the ending. I loved Marcellus. But I feel like there was sooooo much fluff to this book. I never wanted to DNF this book, but there were definitely a lot of boring parts that I just wanted to fast forward through.
